At the time of Independance, Indian Government opted for the Gregorian calendar, based on the Christian era.

The national government follows the national calendar based on the Shaka era (or Saka era). The Shaka year counts 365 days corresponding to the gregorian calendar, the 1st of the Chaitra month corresponds to the 22nd of mars for a normal year and to the 21st of march for a leap year. The 12 months of the year count 30 or 31 days for the first one (31 in the leap years), 31 days for the next 5 months and 30 for the 6 last.

The national calendar started on the 1st of Chaitra of the Shaka era 1879 corresponding to the 22nd of march 1957.
